‘Almost a quarter of working over 50s are trying to make ends meet’ argues Friends life

‘Almost a quarter of working over 50s are trying to make ends meet’ argues Friends life

Colin Williams, Managing Director, Corporate Benefits at Friends Life comments:
“The fact that almost a quarter of the working over-50 population are struggling to make ends meet is worrying. This period of life is a time when the focus should be on consolidating and planning for retirement, though it seems in reality substantial numbers are having to concentrate on simply getting by.  While our research shows people are more focused on saving for their retirement than they were ten years ago, it is worrying that only 21% listed this as being one of their top five financial priorities.
“This just highlights the fact that it is more important than ever to get the message through that saving for retirement is crucial. If many are struggling to make ends meet whilst they are still working, then they may find themselves in more dire straits when they reach retirement, so early planning is critical.”

Job Searching? It's All About Who You Know - Excelle

Renee Weisman | Excelle

Last month I heard a radio broadcast proclaiming that there are six people applying for every available job.

This week I saw a television newscast claiming that number was more like 15, with jobs in manufacturing and construction having 21 people on average applying for every job.
I’m not sure where these shows get their statistics but the message is clear — if you want a job, the competition has never been more intense. What can you do to put yourself on the top of those six, 21 or even 100 others applying for the job?

Making ends meet key concern for over 50s - Workplace Savings & Benefits

Almost a quarter of over 50s are struggling to make ends meet in the current climate, up from 14% a decade ago, research from Friends Life shows.
The insurer surveyed more than 1600 over 50s to find out what was top of their list of financial priorities and discovered that making ends meet was top of the list for 23% of respondents.

23% of over-50s struggling to make ends meet | Daily Debt Advice by Abacus Finance

Thursday, February 28th, 2013
Some 23 per cent of over-50s are focused solely on making ends meet as they struggle with their economic circumstances.
Research by Friends Life has uncovered the stark situation facing many baby-boomers and getting by remains the number one financial priority for this age group.
On top of this, 65 per cent feel they have less disposable income than they did ten years ago, while almost 44 per cent of individuals are still paying off their mortgage.
Colin Williams, managing director of corporate benefits at Friends Life, said: "The fact that almost a quarter of the working over-50 population are struggling to make ends meet is worrying."
He added this period of life is normally a "time when the focus should be on consolidating and planning for retirement" and not on servicing debt.
Mr Williams is also concerned by the fact that only 21 per cent are prioritising saving for retirement.

Something for the weekend ...50 GoldenYears...The Seekers

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Australia’s legendary The Seekers.
The original line-up of The Seekers featuring Judith Durham, Bruce Woodley, Athol Guy and Keith Potger is still together and will mark their 50th anniversary with ‘The Golden Jubilee Tour’ commencing in May.
The Seekers 50 years with the original line-up is somewhat of a world record. We cannot find another example of a group featuring all of its original members that is still recording and touring.
The Seekers songs have become Australian classics. “I’ll Never Find Another You”, “A World Of Our Own”, “The Carnival Is Over”, “Morningtown Ride”, “Georgy Girl” are some of the best known Australian songs ever recorded.
Judith, Bruce, Athol and Keith took time to tell their story to Paul Cashmere at Noise11.com.

We are most fortunate, all of us, The Seekers included, to be experiencing this remarkable event in history. All of us together, some from the beginning, some with great gaps of separation, then renewal, some retrospective fans, but all now realizing the value of our memories and this wonderful opportunity to enjoy them together. And there are some, so young, so new, they cannot grasp the longevity, yet are able to joyously trust that it is there, honored by The Seekers, the media who remember, and by us, all the fans worldwide who recognized excellence then, and are privileged to again embrace it now. What an adventure... What a blessing... We are "players" all... awesome, amazing, such a culmination, such a triumph, and...such great fun!

Here's another interview from last year which featured on 4BC This one
features Athol and Judith. I've no idea how to get rid of the ads and news
which feature during the interview, but it doesn't really spoil it too much.

Well..I promised a newsletter...since I know nothing about HTML coding, there have been some problems in finding and using templates which I can then transfer to the Blogger template. This newsletter was produced with a template, which normally would be emailed to subscribers....unfortunately I am not quite ready for email list subscribers yet..but please do watch this space ...or perhaps the next one !!

Update

Decisions decisions...I have more offers of freelance work than I know what to with and am thrilled to bits...declared it all to Jobcentre and wrote on my declaration that ...yet again.... I am asking for help to become self employed....grants and things that i know are available, so I can get off JSA...which ends for me in June in any case. Jobcentre won't hear of it....say I must apply for and get a job ( in other words not be entitled to claim anything at all and that no help is available to be self employed ) ...but what happens when you are self employed and earning but not earning much....and maybe one week you get nothing ? Mortgage interest relief and council tax help carries on for four weeks if you start work or become self employed....maybe I just take the plunge....give up JSA....bid and bid and bid for freelance work...which I am being offered instead of applying for jobs
I am not and pack my diary with it from all the freelance boards I can...OK, I work all day and night but...it gets the Jobcentre and DWP off my back....at the moment they control my life....because being on jSA and meeting the rules for it is a job in itself !!!

Is freelancing going to be the way forward for many ,especially older people who are forced to try to get work because they cannot claim any benefits..there has been a huge rise in the popularity of such sites as Freelancer and Peopleperhour

Cause for concern

I find myself very appreciative of the concern of my friends , who in spite of being pleased at my relief in being able to get freelance work, and have the possibility of building it up to make an income, are concerned and therefore restrained in their congratulations, in case I give up my benefits and find myself with nothing. I have been advised to seek advice from an advice service. However, what I really need, which is to get disability benefits for my health conditions, including sight, mobilty and heart problems...nobody seems able or willing to try help with, My GP who had been writing sickness certificates, even thoiug the DWP had refused to accept a claim for sickness benefits, now refuses to write certificates, saying that it will be to no avail if he does. However, it is known that the government puts pressure on GP surgeries to not write medical certificates for patients...

Small beginnings

Well, I did say I was going to try to produce newsletters..which are supposed to be a good way to inform your blog readers of what is on there, especially updates..I am still learning how to use newsletter software and I'm sure I will try many versions, some easier than others...but here was my small beginning.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea

Between leaving school , university or college and about twenty you had the benefits and appearance of youth and the optimism that goes with it,but little or no expertise...just plenty of enthusiasm !!

At thirty you felt your experience....knew you had it and had confidence in it,however could not create the leap from one " job title" to another IE transfer skills. ..that hackneyed phrase 'transferable skills'

Maybe you have at different ages, even more than once, had to try and do a new job while not getting the pay you were used to till you proved yourself, i.e. starting all over again.

At 40, you might have been feeling pretty smug and secure, at the top of your tree ..but it was an illusion and came tumbling down

At 50 plus, you may still be in your game, not necessarily unemployed, however you wish to move. you're either on the brink of being laid off or you see the writing on the wall,. Perhaps, like myself as a nursery nurse no longer fit enough to do that work, the work you have done maybe for years and expected to retire in. Or you cannot imagine trying to do what you have been doing for twenty years or more in a physically demanding job now that people are being expected to work to a greater age and the image of seventy year old nurses and teachers is quite something to imagine or you have been searching for months and cannot get anywhere near a chance of a job...

What options do people have or think of to stay in work with so many lay offs and people having to work until almost seventy and probably eventually well into their seventies before getting a pension ?

Held
to ransom

Well, it looks as if for a while yet every 0ther Wednesday will be a time of dread in case of waking up to
snow and ice preventing me from getting to the job centre to sign on.Today we have sun but Spring is slow to come this year and the cold continues....so does the search for a job, or ways to make an income.

As my readers are aware, the issue has  been my need to get not necessarily the best, and not necessarily what I would have as a first choice of occupation, but the quickest way to get an income and be able to pay my bills...it needs to be a means to an income that I can physically  manage with health conditions including a heart condition and mobility issues that leave me housebound in icy winter weather, but I have to apply for jobs since the only benefit I can get is Job seekers allowance, and I have to legally meet the requirements for Job seekers allowance ie..look for a job and apply for jobs.

I have also frequently detailed how the Jobcentre will not recognise and support my attempts to find work  I can do from home and to become self employed and have ignored and dismissed it as if they see it as nothing but an excuse to avoid meeting the requirement  to look for work....

And so I have with fear and trepidation applied for any jobs that physically I might be able to manage , while wondering how I tell an employer that in icy weather I cannot come to work , taking a deep breath and thinking I would have to deal with that issue as and when it happened. It turned out that looking for work from home, was not after all so different from applying for any other job ....I registered on freelance sites and taught myself how to bid for jobs I knew I could do. Writing a bid is a very similar principle to writing a cover letter  when applying for a job. The purpose of the bid is to put across as you do in a CV and cover letter when applying for a job, that you can do the job and convince the employer that you can.Once you understand that, it is really no different to applying for jobs..you submit your bid and more bids..and more bids, and learn that just as when applying for jobs in the traditional way, many, many other people with just as much and more experience are submitting their bids too !!!

Meanwhile, this week the blog has been quiet ...My mortgage company amazingly gave me a mortgage holiday, largely out of desperation, since they told me that in fact, they didn't think I could afford the mortgage at all on the income I had, and that after basic living costs, there wasn't enough to pay the mortgage and still eat and keep warm (ish)....I don't think they saw the chance of any improvement in my circumstances...the mortgage respite  ended in January.Mortgage payments were to commence again...today.

Having had one freelance job, as I now realize by just being lucky to be award it,   it came  as a bit of a shock, when I heard nothing, not a word in response to my next six bids..having assured the mortgage company that from February i would be able to pay the mortgage. This was when I suspected and was indeed right in thinking that I needed to learn how to write a winning bid...so it was back to Google for free online lessons, while seeing that I was back to my only reliable source of income being JSA ( Job seekers allowance ) I had to...apply for jobs, which meant less time to write bids !!!...a vicious circle.

Sailing close to the wind

I am only too aware that it does my blood pressure no good at all but I'm sure that most people who have followed my story know that I sail close to the wind..things tend to work out, resolve themselves in the end but not without a last minute deadline and a few frights on the way !!!...and although I 'm now getting loads of responses to my bids....the mortgage due day has come and gone....so I have to try to negotiate on the basis of the work I have lined up.but haven't been paid for, and then to line up enough work to prove that I can pay the mortgage in future...
