Lung Cancer Awareness Month ~ November 2014 ~

Friday, 21 November 2014

Dear Sir or Madam,

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Please join in and Celebrate, Commemorate and Support all those affected by the #1 Cancer Killer and donate to, in the UK The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, or in the USA and other countries any charities devoted to research into this illness and care and support for patients and their families, to raise funds for this so often misunderstood and underfunded illness.

Lung Cancer, often referred to as the “Invisible Disease”, is generally asymptomatic and often goes undetected or misdiagnosed, while advancing to a late incurable stage. Lung Cancer receives less research funding (per death) than any other type of cancer.

Although early detection screening has been a topic of great concern and study, the guidelines continue to leave a large percentage of the population showing possible symptoms but  not screened  Anyone can get Lung Cancer…It is not a self-inflicted disease that only affects smokers. Widely portrayed and publicized as a “Smokers Disease”, over 60% of newly diagnosed patients are never smokers or quit years ago .An increasing amount of young non-smoking women are being diagnosed. Anyone with lungs can get Lung Cancer.

The first question most Lung Cancer Patients are asked is “Did You Smoke?". The public perception that Lung cancer is a smoker’s disease, the “blame-the-victim” mentality and the overall stigma attached to this disease, far too often denies Lung cancer patients the support and compassion afforded other cancers and major diseases.

Lung cancer claims more lives than breast, colon, kidney, and melanoma cancers ...combined.
This year, Lung Cancer will kill twice as many women as Breast Cancer.
Asbestos, diesel, poor air quality, environmental pollutants, chemical toxicity, occupational exposures, genetics, - are all known factors that contribute to causing Lung Cancer. Anyone that breathes, can get Lung Cancer.

Lung cancer patients face the same physical, emotional and financial hardships as any other cancer. They battle the same fears, depression, losses and gruelling treatments. Yet those battling receive minimal recognition and support from society. Lung Cancer is bad-Its victims are not. Like AIDS, Alcoholism, Obesity, Drug abuse and a myriad of diseases that can be “rooted in causes” Lung cancer patients and caregivers deserve support, not shame and blame. Despite in many cases great efforts, there is a lack of Lung Cancer support groups and people have to go a long way to find one.

In honour of all the people that have been lost to this disease, care for affected loved ones and to those that continue to fight with courage and dignity, I ask you to join in and show support and compassion to the often neglected, but no less deserving, fighters of this lethal cancer.

And if you know anyone affected by this disease...Be sure to give them a hug.

One classroom at a time

We need to educate our youth about lung cancer.

Our kids are like sponges for information and are very receptive. If you have ever spoken at a school, or worked with children, indeed raised them yourself, you know this to be true.

More than anywhere-We need to educate our Kids.
It's important to teach compassion & understanding to kids-rather than instil hatred (no, smokers are not bad people) & misinformation (Lung cancer is not limited to "Smokers"). We also have an opportunity to eradicate fear and instil hope.

November (LCAM) is a great time to contact your local school & request to speak about lung cancer. Most are very appreciative & supportive...And we get to educate adults too!
The best words we can say, come straight from our hearts…and in my case those words are that I never want to see again, what someone I love went through with Lung Cancer
