Hi ho hi ho its off to work we go ....or not..songs of protest
Protest songs are part of the history of the whole movement for protest and change ..the history of different mediums of the arts being used as a means to communicate protest goes back a long way and includes art, poetry... where the poems of the First World war poets such as Dulce Et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen is an example, and recording of historical text such as in the case of journalism....The music of protest can be all sorts of genres from classical to rap.and protests represented in music include women's suffrage, civil rights, the anti-war movement, and songs of peace... such as the Beatles of course who tend to immediately spring to mind.... the feminist movement, animal rights movement, vegetarianism and environmentalism. Even Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", a song in support of universal brotherhood, is a song of protest even if a bit abstract. It is actually a setting of a poem by Schiller celebrating the continuum of living beings (who are united in their capacity for feeling pain and pleasure and hence for empathy), to which Beethoven himself added the lines that all men are brothers.protest songs can often be a bit abstract, but the listener usually knows what it is about, because they are familiar with the issue and those artists involved in supporting the issue...
An 18th-century example of topical song intended as a feminist protest song is "Rights of Woman" (1795), sung to the tune of "God Save the King", written anonymously by "A Lady", and published in the Philadelphia Minerva, October 17, 1795...
