Help Yourself to Stay Motivated

So, January has passed and the year is no longer new, it is February already and the year so far feels pretty much like the last one?

When you feel motivated and energised, you have little trouble working through a to do list and meeting goals. We all have off days, but as far as possible we need to maintain our enthusiasm and keep going with the plans we made at the start of the year.

Zig Ziglar is quoted as saying, "They say motivation doesn't last. Neither does bathing, that's why we recommend it daily."

Trying to stay motivated when you are looking for a job or planning a business start-up, is something you should try to work on every day, stay positive. Of course, if you are registered for unemployment benefits with a job centre or other government programme then it is a different sort of motivation and staying power that is needed because we have to admit that you may find yourself being forced to do a lot of things that do not inspire you , such as having to apply for jobs that you normally would not apply for but you have to,  in order to show that you qualify for your job seekers allowance or going to a work programme and stacking shelves in a shop …It is easy for someone not doing it to say so , but try to see this time as time being spent doing things you don’t want to do so that eventually you can pick and choose, it is easier to get a job when you are already in a job than when you are unemployed .

When you are playing around on Facebook, as indeed you will do at some point during your day, save those inspirational message posts, even print them out if they inspire you that much and put them where you can see them, make use of those fridge magnets and stick the messages on the fridge, use software to put them on your computer screen …have a couple greet you from the bathroom mirror …

Be sure to have the benefit of positive affirmations every day, maybe also you have a faith and so have favourite inspiring passages from your scriptures or other readings. You can choose one or two that you repeat to yourself over a period of time, or you can choose a new one each day.

Remind yourself regularly of why it is that you need to be motivated, to remind yourself of what the goal is works far better than just repeating over and over I must be motivated and positive. Working towards goals can get overwhelming at times, but if you remind yourself of why you're doing it, it's much easier to stay motivated and keep working towards it.

Write down what your expectations are for the steps you are taking, what do you plan to achieve by staying positive and motivated? If you are reading my blog, you are probably wanting to get a job or begin a business. I want to become a professional writer on careers issues for older or disabled people, whatever you want, visualisation is known to be an excellent technique, visualise having what you want and it is more likely to happen

Talk to yourself, yes truly !!! many people benefit so they say, from giving themselves a bit of a talking to, it may seem silly at the beginning but sometimes, because you are the one who really knows what you want and how much it matters that you get it, you are your own best encourager.

Get friends and family and others who are positive about you and what you are doing, to be motivation partners. This is one of the benefits of schemes such as job clubs run by government schemes and some local authorities, libraries and community centres etc because people who go are in the same boat and often encourage each other. Job club members will often pass over to other members jobs they see and think will be suitable for them that they may have missed knowing about.

An encourager does not even have to be the most positive person in the world, maybe they are struggling too and you can help and encourage each other.

It is hard and tiring to be constantly upbeat, motivated and positive, but taking steps to do so certainly helps more than just saying I am going to be motivated or be positive. So, if your motivation has waned a bit since January 1st, don’t give up!!!
