Many people who once had a genuine claim for disability
benefits have been forced by welfare reform to claim Job seekers allowance
instead and apply for jobs or lose even this benefit.
How do they appear fit to do the job and explain a lengthy gap
on their CV when they have not been working due to health issues? You need,
maybe even want that job, but how will you justify the long gap on your CV, or
periods of gaps? There is no doubt that no matter how much the Job centre say
you have to apply for and get a job, gaps on your CV are a disadvantage for
those trying to get work.
The
absence of work on a CV can be due to a variety of things, even raising your family.
I successfully helped a friend to get a job by putting together a CV for her
based on all the transferable
skills she had used while raising her family.
Be honest and do not try to hide things or cover them up
because so many who have tried that with a CV end up being caught out. Almost
everyone has had a break in their career history for some reason at some time
in their lives. Even if you have been in prison, and there are usually advisers
in prison trained to help those preparing for leaving prison to get jobs, and
employment schemes for ex-offenders, put on your CV positive things that you
did while in prison such as education courses , sports etc.
Play up the positive things that you have done while being
out of the paid workforce such as volunteering
http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/resources/how-to-guides/volunteer/doc/benefits-of-volunteering.html
Have you had medical treatment while you were not working? List
the ways this has benefited you and enabled you to take a job.
Accentuate the positive …says the song, if you volunteered or
did a course while not working, then what did you learn? Just because you were
not earning a salary it does not mean that you have been wasting your time and
do not have valuable experience.
